Planning Your Visit

1. Weather & Packing: The "Karen" Climate

Nairobi is famous for its "eternal spring" weather. Because our homestead is in Karen, the air is fresh, and the temperature is generally very pleasant.

  • Year-Round Comfort: Most of the year, you will enjoy warm, sunny days and cool, comfortable nights.

  • What to Pack: Lightweight, breathable clothing is best for the daytime. You do not need heavy winter fleeces unless you are visiting in the "Cold Season" (June, July, and August).

  • The "Light Coat" Rule: For most of the year, a light jacket or a warm cardigan is all you need for the early mornings or when sitting by the fireplace in the evening.

  • Sun Protection: Even when it feels cool, the Kenyan sun is strong! Bring a hat and your favourite sunscreen.

2. Dining & Deliveries

Whether you are on a guided immersion or a private retreat, you are never far from a great meal. Eating Out: Karen is a "foodie" hub. We are a short drive from:

    • The Bohemian: A cosy, artistic spot for coffee and light meals.

    • Tin Roof Café: Famous for healthy, organic lunches in a beautiful garden setting.

    • The Hub & Waterfront Malls: Plenty of international and local restaurants to choose from.

  • Deliveries: If you want to stay cozy at the homestead, download the Glovo or UberEats app. They deliver everything from gourmet burgers to local Kenyan dishes right to our gate.

3. Money Matters: Banking & Exchange

While we live a simple "Ushago" life, we are located in Karen, one of Nairobi's best-serviced neighborhoods. You will find it very easy to manage your finances here.

  • Currency Exchange (Forex): There are many reputable Forex Bureaus nearby, especially at The Hub Mall and The Waterfront Karen. They offer competitive rates for USD, GBP, and Euros.

    • Pro Tip: Ensure your foreign banknotes are crisp, clean, and printed after 2006, as older or damaged bills are often not accepted in Kenya.

  • ATMs & Banking: Most major banks (including Absa, Stanbic, KCB, and Equity) have branches and 24-hour ATMs in the area. Most international Visa and Mastercard debit/credit cards work seamlessly here.

  • The Power of M-Pesa: As mentioned, Kenya is a leader in mobile money. Once we help you get a local SIM card, you can load it with Shillings at a local agent or via apps like WorldRemit or Sendwave. This is the safest way to shop at local markets without carrying large amounts of cash.

  • Credit Cards: While "Cash is King" at small roadside stalls, almost all cafes, pharmacies, and supermarkets in Karen accept major credit cards.

5.Health & Safety

  • Secure Living: We are located in a secure, gated community with 24/7 estate security. You can enjoy your day or walks with total peace of mind.

  • Clean Water:  Though we drink boiled water, we suggest buying your own purified water from stores. You can use the tap water for showering and brushing teeth, but always use bottled water for drinking.
